The type of self-care we don’t talk about

If someone asks you how you take care of yourself, what would you say? Do you journal? Do you take a walk or go to the gym? Do you listen to music? Well whatever you do to take care of yourself or clear your mind, anything you do is important, but self care isn’t just putting on a face mask and saying that you’re taking care of yourself. Self care is doing what’s best for YOU and it seems like no one talks about self care in that way. Nowadays people consider self care as slapping on a face mask watching a movie and drinking wine. While that is fun, it’s not always a form of self care.

Reminder: you can take care of yourself physically all you want, but if you don’t take care of yourself mentally, then you are not taking care of yourself fully!!!!

Now you’re probably reading this thinking “well Emily you’re insane” but I’m not. Mental health is JUST as important as physical health. Still think I’m crazy? Well I bet if you’re reading this your under a lot of stress just like the average person. That just means TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. You don’t have to have a mental illness to have decreasing mental health. Everyone gets anxious, depressed, stressed, and angry, but it’s about how you grow from the situation and how you handle it. Never EVER force yourself to do too much at a time.

And I thought it was important to share. Why? Because it breaks down the different forms of self care that you might not have known about. I sure as hell didn’t know that finances were a form of self care, but it makes sense. I also believe that this image is important because it is important to practice all of these forms of self care. Why? Because your world revolves around these aspects. You wake up, go to work, pay bills, go out with friends and family, and you have personal time. It is so important to sit back and say things like, “Is my job draining me?”, “Okay my relationship is toxic. I need to back off”, or even “I’m in a bad mental state right now, I need time for myself right now”. THIS is self care. Why? Because you’re doing what’s best for you, as I mentioned earlier in this post.

The important thing to remember when performing this type of self care is that you have to know yourself. You need to know yourself because doing what’s best for you and cutting out what’s toxic in your life is solely based on findings about yourself. For instance, how are you supposed to take care of yourself if you don’t know yourself? You know how much you can handle in a setting, you know how hard you can push yourself at the gym, and you know how much work you can handle. In order to practice those forms of self care in the image, you must find yourself and figure out how much you do. You also need to put yourself first, and here is my post about the positives of putting yourself first here.

Self care is crucial to life, and it is more important than you think. If you have trouble finding new ways to perform self care, here are a few of my favorite self care procedures!

  • Going on a walk
  • Going on a random drive with friends
  • Spending time alone with a book or a movie
  • Having a hobby that you like
  • Taking a break while working (especially if you’re working on schoolwork)
  • Taking a social media break

I hope you find an easier time going into this type of advanced self care. It starts off challenging but it gets easier as you keep practicing. You’ll feel so much better when you take time for yourself and start doing what’s best for you.
